Video Games Improve Cognitive Skills in Older Adults

I was looking through articles and after reading an article about how videogames help teens develope social skills i came across another article which i found interesting which was talking about how video games help improve cognitive skills in the elderly.

This is the first such study of older adults, and it is the first to find such pronounced effects on cognitive skills not directly related to the skills learned in the video game,After testing several video games, the researchers selected “Rise of Nations,” which gives gamers points for building cities and “wonders,” feeding and employing their people, maintaining an adequate military and expanding their territory. After the elderly played the game they were given tests to see if the game had made an impact on their cognitive skills. The tests included measures of their ability to switch between tasks, their short-term visual memory, their reasoning skills and their working memory. The researchers tested 20 elderly adults whom had played the game and 20 elderly adults who hadn't played the game. The results in the test proved that the elderly who played the video game did better on the cogntive tests than the ones that did not.

I found this article really intriguing because most articles I read about video games look at video games negatively and this was one of the few articles i found that promoted playing video games.

Jung Typology Test: I'm an ISFJ, meaning that i am introverted with 22 points. sensing with 12 points, feeling with 12 points, and judgeing with one point. this test describes me pretty well

Sim Personality: the sims personality test was pretty dead on accurate it said said i was neat, shy, active, and nice.It might have been a little wrong in teh neat catagory but other than that it seemed right

Attractiveness test: According to this test i like guys who are seductive, cheerful, intelligent and trendy. Althogh i thought this part of the test was pretty acurate my average rating for the atractiveness was below average i didn't really expect that

EQ test: My score was a 39, it said I had a slightly above average EQ. This test said that I basically live for other and accomadate my self around them and that I am not very open to expressing how I feel. I don't think this is completely true, its true to a certain extent but i can think of situations where I have gone against this.

Dear Mom and Dad,

How are you? Does it really matter, I bet you are up to the same lifestyle you've always been rotting in, I've moved onto greater things. My first days in college have been extrordinary, I find myself excelling far above my peers, who knows where I'll be in the days to come. I have found that in such a rubbish world filled with inferior pricks and unstable idiots that I am forced to associate myself around, it won't be difficult to get where I want to in this filthy and pathetic world. I find the endeavers of my peers pathetic, they busy themselves with their useless lifestyles, while I on the other hand, only concentrate on doing what I do best, being better then everyone else.

Ya...okay.

Case Study 2 : Hannah, age 55, was in a major car accident 20 years ago during a cross country trip. Ever since, she has been unable to drive on major highways. Although she does drive, she goes to great length to travel only on back roads and scenic routes. She is able to go where she wants but it often takes her much longer to get there than it should.

After Hannah's major accident she avoids drinving on major highways Colaborationg Hannah's symptoms I have come to the conclusion that Hannah is suffering from chronic posttraumatic stress disorder or PSTD. PSTD can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a natural disaster,or a serious accident. and their respnse to the accident consists of intense fear, helplessness, flashbacks or horror.Treatment of PTSD can include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), group therapy, exposure therapy, and medication. For Hannah i would recommend that she go through exposure therapy because thats the only way she is going to get over fear.

Diana, Princess of Wales, formerly Lady Diana Frances Spencer, was born on 1 July 1961 in Norfolk. She was the youngest daughter of the then Viscount and Viscountess Althorp. Her Parents divorced when she was young and custody was given to the father. In 1981 she married the prince of whales . The Prince and Princess of Wales had two children, Prince William of Wales on 21 June 1982 and Prince Henry of Wales (commonly called Prince Harry) on 15 September 1984. After comments from the media of her "pudgy" appearance she followed a strict diet . Her eating problems were further exacerbated when her marriage underwent great upheaval, and food became the answer to the emptiness she felt.which led her to be bulimic

During the mid- and late-1990s, after this news became public, there was a sharp incline in the number of bulimia cases. Some people quickly speculated that the news of the princess Diana eating disorder was causing more cases of bulimia to occur. However, another fact was soon revealed: it was because of princess Diana’s admission of her struggle with food that many people, about 90% of them women, were able to come forward and admit that they, too, had an eating disorder. Because of Princess Diana’s courage to combat her eating disorder, many other people have found it in themselves to confront their problem and seek treatment. This movement has come to be known as the ‘Diana Effect.’

Although I find people with Bulimia really stupid because i don't understand the point in making yourself throwup it really isn't a good feeling and i couldn't imagine puting yourself through that everyday just because you are not what you think you should look like. Even though I have a hard time giving respect to people with Bulimia i think Princess Diana did the right thing by aknowledging that she had a problem becuase she helped a lot of people come out and admit that they also had that same problem.
